The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency in the U.S with an annual budget of about $6.9 billion (FY 2010), and the funding source for approximately 20 percent of all federally supported basic research conducted by America’s colleges and universities. In many fields such as mathematics, computer science and the social sciences, NSF is the major source of federal backing.

The Office of International Science and Engineering (OISE) serves as a focal point for international science and engineering activities both inside and outside NSF.
OISE promotes the development of an integrated, Foundation-wide international strategy, and manages international programs that are innovative, catalytic, and responsive to a broad range of NSF interests.
